Moot Court

This event will help students learn to analyze legal issues and the practical side of practicing law.


Rules & Guidelines:
Team Composition-

  • Each team shall consist of a minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 members. This number cannot be modified under any circumstances.
  • There shall be 2 speakers and 1 researcher designated in each team. Teams shall identify such speakers and researcher during registration.
  • Each team will have a team code and each participant shall be given an individual code.
  • Dress Code: Inside the Court Room, the participants shall be in Formal dress only.
  • Female(s) : White Salwar and Kurta or White Shirt and Black pant along with Black Coat and Black Shoes.
  • Male(s) : White Shirt, Black Trousers, Black Tie along with Black Coat and Black Shoes.
  • Language: The medium of the competition shall be English.
  • Memorials: The following requirements for memorials must be strictly followed.
  • Any noncompliance of which shall attract penalties as per the description of the institute.
  • Each team must prepare memorials for both sides to the dispute (Plaintiff /Complainant/Appellant and Defendant/Opposite Party/Respondent as the case may be).
  • The briefs shall be consistent with the Supreme Court Rules, 1966.
  • Once the memorials have been submitted, no revisions, supplements, or additions will be allowed.
  • 4 Sets (for both sides) of memorials must be submitted by each participating team for Moot problem no. 1 and Moot problem no. 2 respectively at the time of reporting on 4th October 2013 at 3 P.M onwards.
  • Late submissions beyond the stipulated date will attract suitable penalty in the form of deduction of marks as per the discretion of the host institute.
  • It's the responsibility of the respective teams to ensure that the correct number of copies of the memorial(s) is submitted to the organizers.
  • Format of Memorials : The memorial must conform the following specifications.
  • Color of the cover page must be Blue in case of Plaintiff/Complainant/Appellant & Pink in case of Defendant/Opposite Party / Respondent.
  • The memorial shall not exceed 35 typed A4 size pages, written in one side.
  • Font of the body – Times New Roman;Font Size- 12; Line Spacing-1.5”; 1” Margin from all sides.
  • Page Numbering – Bottom Middle.
  • Note: Identity of the Institution shall not be revealed anywhere in the memorial, violation of which shall invite suitable penalties as per the discretion of the host institute, which may lead to disqualification. The decision of the host institute shall be final and binding.
  • Marking of memorials : The marks will be awarded for the memorials in the following manner.
  • Every memorial will be marked on a total of 20 marks and the team memorial marks will be the average of the total of both sides.


  • The results will be final & binding on all the teams.
  • Oral Rounds


i. Preliminary:-

  • In the preliminary round each team will argue once from either of the sides.
  • For determining the side for which the teams shall be arguing, there will be draw of lots in the orientation programme.
  • 30 minutes time will be awarded for each team subject to a maximum of 20 minutes for a single speaker.


ii. Semi finals:-

  • The best four teams adjudged in the preliminary round shall qualify for the semi-finals.
  • Which side the team will be arguing for will be decided by the draw of lots.
  • 40 minutes time will be awarded for each team subject to a maximum of 25 minutes for a single speaker.


iii. Final:-

  • Two teams from the semi-final will qualify for the final round on knockout basis.
  • 40 minutes time will be awarded for each team subject to a maximum of 25 minutes for a single speaker.


Note:

(1) MOOT PROBLEM NO. 1 is for the preliminary round only and MOOT PROBLEM NO. 2 is for the semi-final and subsequently for the final round. (both the problems are attached as Annexure – I)

(2) The time of the oral argument may be extended only at the discretion of the Judges.
